ICCA is one of the most prominent organizations within the international meetings. It is the only association that comprises membership, representing the main specialists in handling, transporting and accommodating international events.
ICCA's network is composed of over 950 suppliers to the international meetings industry spanning the globe, covering members in 90 countries. ICCA’s global congress is a great gathering of its global members, and it is also a good platform to learn and network within the meetings industry. ICCA’s 52nd Global Congress will for the first time in its history be held in Shanghai, China. To know more about ICCA, its congress and the connection with China meetings industry, MeetingsChina Magazine had a special interview with Mr. Noor Ahmad Hamid, Regional Director, Asia Pacific, ICCA.
MeetingsChina: How will you respond if asked about ‘What is ICCA’?
Noor: ICCA is a global association. The basic foundation of ICCA is we are an association for suppliers in the meetings industry. If you are involved in the international association meetings, you should be an ICCA member where you could share your business with other members. Just like other Associations, ICCA also has members around the world. We have more than 900+ members in 88 countries. ICCA members meet annually at the ICCA Congress. This year we will meet in Shanghai, next year in Turkey, and the following year in Argentina. So it goes from one region to another. The foundation of ICCA is sharing business information on rotation meetings, and our focus is only on international association meetings because this has business value for every city who wants to bid. In short, ICCA is a global association, and its members are suppliers, including PCOs, conference centers and cities bureau.
MeetingsChina: Why did you choose China for your global congress?
Noor: Just like any other association, China was interested to host the Congress, they bid and they won the right of this hosting. Four years ago, Shanghai, Gold Coast and Houston bid for the ICCA Congress. The three cities had to do a final presentation to the ICCA Board who made the decision. I believe Shanghai won because they gave a strong and compelling business case on why ICCA must come to China. After all, ICCA has never had our congress in China before. In fact this is the first time that ICCA is coming to Mainland China. I think one of the reasons could be that Shanghai has great convention facilities and more importantly, when Shanghai put in the bid, they really knew what an association meeting is all about. That’s why we come to Shanghai. The decision was made 4 years ago.
MeetingsChina: As far as I know, many Chinese cities and supplies are considering joining ICCA. How do you think about this?
Noor: Of course we would like to have more China members in ICCA. However, we are equally concerned about the quality of members. ICCA is an association, where members make connections and by making connections they would be able to share business.
MeetingsChina: ICCA is not a business center.
Noor: We are not a business center. In fact, we do not give business to members. It’s just like the BestCities Global Alliance with which you are very familiar. They’re all ICCA members. Because they’re ICCA members, they meet regularly including at ICCA Congress. They decided by working together they would be able to set standard for best practice and share business leads. So this is how global networking is important.
MeetingsChina: What do you think of Chinese cities and industry companies’ connection with the global conference (ICCA Congress)? What can I do in the conference?
Noor: What you get out of the Congress is Education. Continued learning is the most important thing for everyone in the industry. Not all the companies in China can afford to go overseas for education or for global networking. Since the congress is coming to China, it would be economical to attend the Congress at your own city. I believe China will benefit a lot more by hosting the congress here, because not only Chinese companies and cities can attend, but also all other Asian destinations could be here in large numbers as well.
MeetingsChina: What other things can I get from the Congress, besides learning?
Noor: Learning is one of them. The second is global networking, simply because the delegates come from around the world. As I’ve said, as an association, we see global networking very important and from many different levels: PCOs from Asia, Europe, Africa, Latin America and North America could interact with each other. Convention Centers can talk to each other, sharing business information. All Convention Bureaus would also be able to share information with each other. This is how members are networking globally. So the ICCA Congress is indeed a business platform.
MeetingsChina: They do business among members?
Noor: Yes. At ICCA Congress, members come together as a big ICCA family. Here we could network and share business as a family. Unlike at trade shows, all members are occupied to meet buyers, thus at ICCA Congress they would have the opportunity to interact within each other.
MeetingsChina: How can Chinese non-ICCA-member companies attend the Congress?
Noor: Non-members can apply to attend as observers. With respect to observers, one company can only send one person and he/she can attend one time only. As an observer, they can attend all sessions at the Congress, including the general assembly. The only thing that they cannot do is to have the right to vote.
MeetingsChina: What language is used in the congress?
Noor: English.
MeetingsChina: English is a very big question for the Chinese.
Noor: English is a universal language for all.
MeetingsChina: How many days will the Congress last?
Noor: 4 days.
MeetingsChina: Do you think the coming Congress will be the largest ever since?
Noor: We are not concerned about the largest congress but rather we focus on quality. We want members to attend the congress, so that they could get maximum benefit in terms of education, business networking, and so on. We are expecting about 1000 delegates to come to Shanghai. The largest congress for ICCA was 2 years ago in Leipzig, Germany, where it had over 1000 delegates. I believe we can achieve the same number if not more. But again this is not our focus, and our focus is that we have strong content for the congress.
MeetingsChina: What do you think of China’s meetings industry’s future and its connection with ICCA?
Noor: The China’s meetings industry is growing at a rapid pace. Every city in China is different and has many things to offer. Not all international congress can come and organize a meeting in big cities like Beijing or Shanghai in China. Some would want to have their meeting in second-tier cities like Hangzhou, Xi’an, Yangzhou, and etc. Due to the many choices that you could offer I believe that China has huge opportunity to attract the meetings industry segment. Having said that, China needs to learn more from the international community, and meanwhile the international community would also want to learn from China. There is a lot we can learn from each other.
MeetingsChina: If you give one word to Chinese companies, what would you say?
Noor: Learn. Learning to have professional standards is the most important thing for Chinese companies. There are a lot of Chinese companies becoming overnight meeting or event organizers. They organize conferences but they don’t care about the international standards. You need expertise, human resources or software to match the superior hard ware or facilities that you already have. Look at how China organise Olympics and World Expo. You know when China played host, they made sure it was the best Olympics and they also put out the biggest World Expo. If you can organize Olympics and World Expo, I am sure that you can manage a conference of 2000 delegates. Meanwhile, you need high level of professionalism in organising them, even though meetings are much smaller than mega events.
MeetingsChina: Thank you very much. I hope that ICCA will play a more important role in China’s meetings industry.
Noor: We will love to corporate Chinese cities, companies, and convention centers, because these are the key people that can bring success to China’s meetings industry. Thank you. ■
